WELCOME TO THORNLEY PARISH WEBSITE

Thornley is a quaint mining village located in beautiful County Durham, close to the East Coast. It is approximately five miles from Durham and seven miles from Peterlee. With easy access to the A1 and A19, Thornley is a convenient stop for journeys up and down the Durham Heritage Coast.

The rich history of Thornley finds its foundation in the sinking of the colliery in 1835 and also includes the founding of the Durham Miners’ Association in 1869. The development of Hartlepool as a port city wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of Thornley Colliery. The shutdown of the mine in 1970 left many workers unemployed, but their legacy lives on through the individuals who call Thornley their home.
